On Baby Stetson + Guest Post

This book was another great Texas romance (seems to be a theme around here this week). Stick around after the review for a guest post directly from Ms. Barrett. Also, check out the earlier post from today all about a new release from one of my FAVORITE author(ess)es.

In small Texas towns, strangers come and go...
Left in a Stetson hat, on the steps of the local bed and breakfast, Avery Callimer came into the world on a wing and a prayer. Raised by loving adoptive parents, she's never lacked for love...only the knowledge of her past.
By day she works the Inn, but by night...Avery comes alive as lead singer in a band. Life was good...stable, until new guests blew into town.
Some strangers come with secrets and lies.
Lucas Bennett is one such stranger. Drifting from one mess to another has left him jaded. Doesn't matter the dramas are never his doing. Giving it one last shot to make a fresh start lands him Harmony's Echo, Texas and smack dab in front of the tantalizing Avery.
Despite his best efforts to ignore the burn Avery's ignited within, he's intent to keep his distance. Secrets have followed him. Secrets he doesn't want Avery to know. Each time they're near the other things heat up like a brushfire on a dry Texas prairie. But maybe, after the dust settles and the smoke clears, love can bloom with a fresh start.

Baby Stetson is another book that features a couple you just want to cheer for, despite all the obstacles in the way. Avery is an adopted Texas girl, singing in her country band, working in her parents inn and dreaming of a life on the Nashville stages.

Avery also struggles with a past full of holes. She earns the nickname, Baby Stetson because she was an abandoned baby discovered in a cowboy hat. She longs to know the world from which she came, but fears hurting her adoptive parents. Her parents have a heart of gold, and want to see Avery fly, even though she's afraid.

Suddenly, quiet, quaint Harmony's Echo is full of drama. A mysterious man named Lucas threatens to run away with Avery's heart. A man named Rodney shows up claiming to be her father. Avery begins to recieve anonymous messages asking her to be safe and warning her against Rodney. Also, her sister shows up with a basket full of issues. If that weren't enough, her mom starts showing signs of an illness.

Avery and Lucas have it packed in against them, but the sparks are undeniable. It was fun to watch them untangle their web and take a chance on love. One of the things I loved most about Barrett's work was that her book felt so real. At times, it felt more like reading Avery's journal than a novel. I loved all the insight into their life.

Besides, haven't we all had one of those weeks that was just beyond terrible?

“Wow.  This is a nice kitchen,” Lucas said, closing the door behind him.

Avery faced him.  “You like to cook?”

“Oh yeah.  I learned at a young age that I had to take care of myself, so I taught myself to cook.  Now it’s something I enjoy.”

“Are you good at it?”

“I’m good at a lot of things, Avery.”  Lucas closed the gap between them.

Too close, too close!

She couldn’t back up anymore, though.  Behind her was the counter.  Her back was already pressed up against it.  Lucas looked at her like he wanted to devour her.

“Lucas...”

“I know I need to stay away from you, Avery.  All I want is one kiss.  I’ve got to taste you.  Tell me no, right now, and I’ll back away.”

Lucas pressed his body to hers.  He slid his arms around her waist, pulling her to him.  His face, only inches from hers, lowered.  “Tell me now, Avery.  Because if you don’t, I’m going to kiss you.”

Don’t!  No!  Yes!  Do it!  No!

She couldn’t get the words out.  All she could think about were Lucas’s lips, mere inches from hers, sexy, tempting, inviting.  Avery opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out.

“I’m not supposed to be so attracted to you, Avery,” Lucas whispered, then his lips crashed down on hers.

He cupped her face, pulling her into his kiss.  She didn’t even have time to decipher what that comment meant.  Avery tilted her head upward, responding to his kiss.  She wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders as her fingers dug into them.  Holy hell, this man could kiss.  The deep urgency of his kisses drove her mad.

“Lucas,” she muttered against his lips.  His touch was lethal.  It wasn’t supposed to feel this good.  Or amazing.  Or sensational.  Avery wasn’t supposed to react to him this way.  She didn’t even know this man!  Oh, but she knew his gaze, so intent on her, and she was fixated on him.

“Yes, Avery?”

He trailed kisses along her neck now.  Desire burned within, igniting quickly.  His lips were back on hers now.  He darted his tongue out, touching the corners of Avery’s lips, pushing his way in gently.  Avery opened for him, needing another taste.  Lucas’s erection pressed into her, only making her want him more.  She lost all senses, other than to kiss him.  Lucas hoisted her up, still pressing her against the counter.  Avery squealed and wrapped her legs around him.  More fiery kisses came next.  His tongue was gentle, daring, inquiring.

“Avery.”  He moaned against her lips, nipping lightly.  “I want to take you to-”

They broke apart as the sound of loud voices neared.  Lucas put her down quickly and backed away from her.

And now for a peak inside Ms. Barrett's brain....

There's realism in my fiction romance!

Before I get into my post, I want to say thank you for having me here today. I appreciate this opportunity so much!

Often times, I see a lot of comments from people about why they chose or don't chose to read a certain book.  I hear “I read for a fantasy, for an escape.”

I get that! I totally do!

With more options for authors to go with small presses, epublishers, and self publishing, the kind of books and the subjects authors touch on have become more real.

Where am I going with this? I'm talking about realism in romance. Situations that are so true to every day life that it smacks you in the face. Okay, not quite in the face, but come on, you know what I mean :)

I love to read a variety of stories. Whether the plot has a lot of contemporary real world issues that are addressed, or something that is nothing like that, and really does take a reader on an escape, makes them wish for that kind of world, or life.  If I can relate to the characters or plot, no matter the type of book, I'm happy.

What I find great about realism in romance is that I connect to the characters better.  I can envision their situation and my emotions go all over the place, depending on what that is.

So when I started writing, I created characters that have a lot of realism in them, but the one thing I knew was that there would be a happily ever after for them, no matter how much they go through beforehand.

Here's an example of it in The Secret Santa Wishing Well, my debut book.  Cheyenne, the heroine, is a struggling single mom. She's got two great kids, and her ex husband doesn't really do much other than add drama to her life.  Cheyenne has a lot of strength, but she's got a lot of doubts and fears, too.   There's a lot of realism there. How many times do you hear about single parents doing all they can for their kids? Cheyenne would put her line on the line before letting anything or anyone messed with her kids. And I got a lot of compliments about the realistic feel of the book, and how touching it was.

For Baby Stetson, I put plenty of it there, too.  Avery, the heroine, has a lot going on in her world. She struggles with her feelings about her best friend, Jameson, who she'd been dating for the past few years. Now, Jameson made a mistake and I wasn't sure how readers were going to react to him. When I first wrote him, honestly, I didn't realize how much I would come to love him. Sure, he did something that to some, might not be forgivable, and to others, he would.  Lucas, the hero, has a few bonding moments with Jameson. Yes, the current and the ex can be friends.

I've read some books that tackle on some difficult, controversial, and and taboo subjects. While they aren't for everyone, I find it to be very rewarding to read a story like that, to understand, feel the emotions, and have a deep connection.

My question to you? Do you like a lot of realism in your romance? I'd love to hear your responses!

On If the Shoe Fits

I can't even tell you how excited I was to get an email from Ms. Smith requesting a review of her new romance, If the Shoe Fits.  I am a sucker for fairy tales and a new modern twist on Cinderella was definitely something right up my alley.

Ms. Smith did not disappoint. If the Shoe Fits tells the tale of Ella, a fashion wannabe working as a gopher at Cardiff's top modeling agency.  Her life is a bit of a mess, but thanks to her fabulously gay best friends, it's also a bit great. She spends her days running around the agency, immersed in the culture she loves even if she did not have what it takes to hack it as a fashion model.

Suddently, a new boss (Max Charming) literally turns Ella's world on her head. She finds herself developing a new klutzy gene. It seems that everytime she sees him, she ends up injured and in her underwear. She also can't help a growing attraction to Charming, despite how much she tries to fight it.

At home, things are not much better for poor Ella. Her wicked ex-stepmother is trying to get more money from her lonely, clueless father. To make matters worse, her cat has discovered its voice, literally. Muse has now decided she not only knows how to talk but has appointed herself Fairy Godmother. She thinks Ella and Max are meant to be, if only Ella could stop cursing and forget wanting to sleep with Charming until after she convinces him to marry her.

What I loved about this book is that Smith's prose is both eloquent and hilarious. Ella is a mess, a cursing, clumsy, insecure mess and I loved every inch of her. She truly is the star of the show, if only she could learn to believe in herself. Her attempt at romancing Max is often pitiful and has you laughing out loud.

If the Shoe Fits is a bit frivolous and a tad predicatble (fairy tales=happy endings) but that does not mean it isn't great. It's laugh out loud funny, a scrumptious little treat. Sometimes, the world calls for a book that is just plain fun, and Smith certainly delivered. In fact, I cannot wait to read the next thing to come off her pen.

If the Shoe Fits made me smile so much, it gets 5/5 Paw Prints!

On Cassie Scot

Cassie Scot is the ungifted daughter of powerful sorcerers, born between worlds but belonging to neither. At 21, all she wants is to find a place for herself, but earning a living as a private investigator in the shadow of her family’s reputation isn’t easy. When she is pulled into a paranormal investigation, and tempted by a powerful and handsome sorcerer, she will have to decide where she truly belongs.

Cassie Scot: Paranormal Dectective was probably the best book to introduce me to Christine Amsden. Cassie was the kind of character I almost immediately fall in love with. She is smart, kind and oh, so troubled. Imagine, growing up as a member of one of the town's most-powerful and most-magical family. Now, throw in the fact that Cassie does not really have powers, and that she has to hide the family magic from most of the town.

Now, she has opened up a private dectective agency, with hopes of making a difference. But most days, there are just crickets. Well, at least until the Belinda mystery begins.

This book is just tons of fun. It's suspensful and also laugh out loud funny. Cassie is goofy and clumsy, but incredibly likable. Cassie Scot: Paranormal Detective definitely has me wanting to check out more of Amsden's work.

Cassie was such a fun coming of age story, and I can't wait to see what is in store for the rest of the series.

Cassie Scot earns 4/5 Paws Prints. It's a great read

Excerpt from Chapter 5
Belinda’s collection of potions was extensive and many of her customers believed in the power of her brews. They were probably crap, especially those offering up money and wishes, because if she really could brew them, why would she need to sell them? Others, such as those offering weight loss or hair regrowth, might have been legitimate–I had no real way of knowing.
Then my eyes fell on a tiny vial with the word “MAGIC” on the label. I picked it up and turned it over to read the details: “Tap into magical energies you never knew were there. You’ll be able to cast spells and brew potions. Curse your neighbors and find true love. $15.95”
“Impossible,” I muttered. Surely, if such a thing could be, my parents would have fed it to me years ago.
“That stuff is crap,” Evan said.
I jumped. I had almost forgotten he was there. He stood by a bulletin board, where he had been staring at pictures of Belinda, her friends, and her family. “Belinda mostly knows how to brew love potions, and even then she keeps the strongest ones to herself…the ones that truly ensnare the mind and heart.”
I replaced the vial of MAGIC, with just a tiny twinge of regret, and moved on to Belinda’s love potions. She had one full shelf dedicated to love, decorated with pink hearts and red roses. A lot of these potions were in the form of perfumes, creams, shampoos, and most especially–chocolates. The bottom third of the shelf was dedicated to boxes of chocolate candy in different flavors and potencies.
While a strong love potion will ensnare the mind and the heart, most of the weaker love potions are what you might call suggestive magic. They could cause you to feel affection, adoration, or arousal, but they typically left the higher brain functions intact.
At random, I picked up a bottle of perfume from the top shelf and read: “Induces powerful lust. Spray on your intended and make sure you are the first person they see. Lasts about an hour.”
The thing you have to understand about any magic is that there are good ways to use it, and bad ways to use it. The concept of black magic is a hotly debated topic among sorcerers. Even death, in self defense, is a shade of gray. As I stood there, reading the functions of the various love potions, I thought of all the innocent and harmful ways they could be used. A couple in a committed relationship might have a lot of fun with a spray of lust. On the other hand, using it on an unwilling victim…
I shuddered as I replaced the bottle and accidentally knocked one of the neighboring bottles of perfume to the ground. It shattered, splashing perfume all over my open-toed sandals.
“Crap.”
“What happened?” Evan asked, his voice hard and alert. I could hear him moving closer.
“Stop! I don’t want to see you right now.”
“Which potion was that?” Evan asked, still in that hard-edged voice of command.
I pointed to the row of similar bottles on the top shelf. “Lust.”
One of the little bottles floated away from the shelf, but I did not turn around to see what Evan was doing with it. Instead, I started looking through my purse for a pack of tissues to clean the mess off my feet.
“Cassie, I have some bad news for you.”
“Worse, you mean?”
“This potion doesn’t take affect until you actually look at someone. Your hour starts then.”
“Crap. I don’t suppose there’s an antidote?”
“Sure,, but it will take me about three days to brew, once the moon is full.”
“Okay.” I considered my options as I wiped the mess off my foot and started gathering the tiny shards of glass. “Well, I guess I could-” I stopped, I had nothing to put at the end of that sentence. I kind of hoped Evan would have a suggestion, but to my surprise, he started laughing at me. “This isn’t funny.”
“Come on, it is a little funny.”
Maybe it would be funny in a few days, if I didn’t die of embarrassment first. “I suppose I could call my boyfriend.” I didn’t want to explain any of this to him, and though I trusted him, I didn’t really want him to become the object of my uncontrolled lust for an hour. I just didn’t know what else to do.
“Who are you seeing?” Evan asked, all traces of amusement gone.
“Braden,” I said.
“Who?”
“Braden Walker. He was a year ahead of us in school. He was on the football team.”
“Oh. I think I remember him.” Evan paused for a long moment. “You know you could do better, right?”
“It’s none of your business.” I had to fight the urge to glare at him when I said that. He barely knew Braden, so what made him think he could make any judgments? Besides, I didn’t know why he thought I could do better, when I had done very little dating in high school. I hadn’t known if my family name scared people off, or if there was something fundamentally wrong with me, but Braden had at least restored my confidence that the latter was not true.
“Listen,” Evan said. “I need to do another spell. It’ll just be a few minutes. We’ll figure something out after, just don’t look at me until I’m done.”
“I get that.” I sounded more annoyed at the admonition than I should have, because his quip about Braden still stung.
Within seconds, I smelled candles and incense, and heard Evan muttering under his breath. I found a trash can by a nearby desk, and tossed the damp tissues inside. Then I spotted a black day planner on top of the desk. It was the sort of thing that ancient relatives used to buy me for school, but I never used. Belinda seemed to have liked it, though. Nearly every page through the end of July was covered in notes and reminders.
Over the weekend, she wrote, she had rented a cabin in the woods by the lake. She should have been back, though, because in about half an hour, she had a dinner date at Hodge Mill with Sheriff Adams. I blinked and re-read the name several times to be sure I had seen it correctly, but unfortunately, I had. My old boss and friend had been acting a little strangely that afternoon, but I hadn’t guessed he might be under the influence of a love spell.
“Finished,” Evan said. I heard him gathering up his supplies. “This isn’t good. I suspected it this afternoon, but now I’m sure–there’s no threshold on this home. Which either means Belinda has permanently moved, or else she’s dead.”
“Do you think she had something to do with your cousin’s murder?” I asked.
“I don’t know what to think. I can’t come up with a reason she’d do it, but then again, where is she?”
“I found her day planner,” I said, holding it up over my shoulder so Evan could see. “She was supposed to go to the lake this weekend, and she’s got a date tonight at Hodge Mill. You’ll never guess who it’s with.”
“Who?”
“The sheriff.”
“Huh.”
“I know it’s a long shot, but I figure we should go to Hodge Mill and see if she shows up–or if the sheriff does. After that–”
“Cassie,” Evan interrupted.
“Yeah?”
“How much do you trust me?”
“Er-Why?”
“Turn around,” he said.
“Did you figure something out?” I said, my heart beating a little faster. “Some way to stop the potion?”
“Yes.”
“But you said-” I never got a chance to finish, because just then, Evan moved into my field of vision and I turned to stare at him properly.
In all the years I had known him, I had somehow missed the fact that Evan has the most incredible blue eyes. They sparkle like diamonds when he laughs, and darken like the sea when he’s angry. At that moment, I thought I could swim in those eyes. I had never spent much time looking at his lips before, but I suddenly became aware of just how kissable they were. I started towards him, my focus set on those beautiful, kissable lips.
I couldn’t move. Something was forcing my body absolutely still.
“Sorry about that,” Evan said, not sounding sorry at all. He swung a satchel over his shoulder and started out the door. I found myself following behind him, but I wasn’t the one moving my legs. “Nothing to do but let it run its course. If you want to hate me in an hour, I’ll understand.”

On Gambling On A Secret

When Charli bets everything on a secret, will she find the deck stacked against her?

Former runaway-turned heiress Charli Monroe is hiding her sordid past and planning a future in Colton, Texas. Attending the local college for a degree in social work, she intends to raise cattle on her newly purchased ranch, which she plans to open as a home for troubled teens. Only a few glitches—the Victorian mansion is crumbling, the barn needs a roof, and her oilman neighbor wants more than friendship. When she meets Dylan Quinn, Charli is willing to take a chance on the town drunk to help her rebuild the rundown ranch.

Dylan has his demons, too. The former Special Forces commander can’t get past his ex-wife’s betrayal and the botched mission that left him with much more than a bad limp. Certain the greedy oilman next door to Charli wants much more than just her heart, Dylan’s even willing to stop drinking in order to protect her.

When things get dangerous and secrets of the past are revealed, is he only looking out for his new employer, or is she the new start he so desperately needs?

CONTENT WARNING: Details abuse of a minor, drug abuse, alcoholism, swearing, spicy sex, murder.

You guys, Gambling on a Secret is such a spicy little treat that I was so happy to discover on my bookshelf! On a week when I really was not feeling well and was more than a little stressed out, this book is such a great antidote.

Charli and Dylan are one of those couples that you want to cheer for straight out of the starting gate. When he first drove up to her ranch, all pissed off and damaged, I wanted them to go toe to toe, straight to the bedroom! Sparks were there immediately, and I would have been really irritated if someone else was Charli's intended match.

Charli is a girl with a past, a runaway kid with a history of drugs, who just wants to start up a gorgeous ranch and help out other girls like her. Dylan is a former solider, who wants to be a rancher, but cannot let go of guilt from a service-related tragedy. And somehow they are a match made in heaven.

Of course, starting up a new ranch is no easy feet, especially when Dylan's step-uncle sets his sights on Charli and the ranch. They have to overcome personal battles and some serious threats to thrive, but man, oh, man is it a fun ride.

One of the other elements that made Gambling on a Secret so enjoyable was the town. Colton, Texas has some deep roots, and loads of drama. I do not know if anyone watches the remake of Dallas? I adored Season 1, but miss season 2. Anyway, this book reminded me of the show. It's dramatic, soapy and just oh, so good.

I'm waiting with baited breath to hear more of Ellwood's stories from Colton (PLEASE, let there be more!)

This delicious, soapy little book earns 4/5 Paw Prints!

“Ferguson, what are you doing here?” Dylan barked.

Leon ambled toward them on the stone path. “I’m saving a young maiden from torment. What are you doing here, playing the part of the devil?”

“I’m Miss Monroe’s new manager.” The deadly edge of his voice matched the flintiness of his eyes. “If there’s anyone to save the young maiden from, it’s you.”

“Mr. Quinn, please.” She turned to Leon. “Leon, is there something I can do for you?”

He smiled, showing off perfect white teeth in a face handsome enough to belong to an actor. “I was just passing by on my way home and decided to stop. How are the boys working out?”

Dylan’s stance widened and his hands flexed at his slides. “What boys?”

“Charli and I have entered into a business arrangement.”

She lost the battle with the urge to wrap her arms around herself. As much as she appreciated Leon’s kindness, respected him, and was even a little attracted to him, something about him didn’t sit right with her. He represented her peers in the community. According to Mrs. Pratt, besides the Cartwrights, she and Leon were undoubtedly the wealthiest residents in the county. No one in Colton could learn about her past. It would ruin her, and Leon, no doubt, had the means to dig up the dirt.

“Really?” Dylan stepped closer to her in a protective manner. Whiskey tainted his breath as the warmth of the exhalations tickled her cheek. “What kind of business arrangement?”

She could protect herself. Dylan Quinn wasn’t any safer than Leon Ferguson. Stepping away from him, she forced her arms to her sides. “Mr. Quinn, I can handle this.”

She faced Leon. “I’m amazed by how much the men got done since starting on Monday. The foreman told me last evening they’d be reseeding another fifty acres for hay this morning. And they have the corrals fixed and started on the fencing in the north pasture.”

“Good, good.” He glanced at Dylan. “I’ll be going, unless you need a more reliable exterminator. I couldn’t help but overhear about your snake infestation. I can give you the name of the company that has gotten rid of the snakes in our lakes over on Oak Springs for years.”

Although he presented the perfect solution, she didn’t the like way Leon had looked at Dylan as he said the word exterminator. “No, Mr. Quinn is quite capable of getting rid of the snake.”

“Oh, I’m sure he is.” Leon tipped his hat. “Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you, Charli.” Dylan’s jaw tightened as his uncle glanced at him. “It’s good to see you up among the living again.”

Leon headed back to his Porsche. With no pretense of lowering his voice, Dylan said, “Now, there’s a snake no one wants in their garden.”

Upon hearing the jibe, Leon’s shoulders jerked in mid-stride.

Rattled by Leon’s attention and the snake fiasco, she turned on Dylan. “You aren’t off the hook. I want those snakes gone.”

“We’ll see.”

“I hate snakes.” She shuddered and put her hands on her hips. “Maybe I should have asked him who the exterminator is.”
